The Modus team extends our congratulations to NuScale Power, which recently submitted a design certification application for its small modular reactor to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The NRC will now conduct a detailed review before issuing a certification allowing developers to build the NuScale system.
NuScale’s application was the first DCA ever submitted to the NRC for an SMR – a technology that aims to provide affordable, reliable power from scalable plants whose output can be adjusted to meet demand. The application contains 12,000 pages of technical information and is the culmination of eight years of work from more than 800 people.
NuScale plans to build its first SMR on the site of the Idaho National Laboratory. It will be owned by the Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems (UAMPS) and run by Energy Northwest, and is expected to be operational by 2026.
Modus’ Jim Carter served on the NuScale board of directors and was responsible for establishing the company’s program office. Therefore, we fully understand and appreciate the years of extensive effort involved in designing the NuScale SMR system and preparing the application.
