Darlington Nuclear Reactor Site Receives License Renewal

A couple months ago, we discussed some recent developments in the Ontario_SkylineDarlington Refurbishment project. At that time, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission was close to announcing its decision on an unprecedented 10- to 13-year extension of its license and approval to rebuild and extend the life of reactors. On December 29, it made its decision.

“Canada’s nuclear power regulator said that it has granted Ontario Power Generation Inc. (OPG) a renewed operating license for the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station in Clarington, Ontario, which is responsible for 20 percent of Ontario’s electricity needs.”

The license is valid from Jan. 1, 2016 through Nov. 30, 2025, and is the longest license ever granted to a Canadian nuclear power plant. As the Conference Board of Canada recently estimated, this project is expected to generate nearly $15 billion in economic benefit to the local economy.

This decision is great news as we kick-off 2016, and we would like to extend our congratulations to OPG and the team(s) supporting this project.
