Paper: A Realistic Look at the Path to SMR and Advanced Reactor Commercialization
Category: Thought Leadership
The promise of small modular reactor (SMR) technologies has received significant attention within the nuclear energy industry. Less attention has been paid, however, to the challenges of making those technologies commercially viable.
A solid concept is not enough. Technology developers will need to address considerations including proof of concept, technical issues, markets and competition, brand recognition, fundraising, prototyping, licensing, intellectual property, and many others.
Modus’ Jim Carter took a look at this important issue in a paper he delivered at the Canadian Nuclear Society’s 39th Annual Conference. He outlines many of the challenges that face technology developers and suggests actions they can take to successfully manage them.
